Paying Yourself or Using Insurance

Billing through insurance puts a diagnosis on the claim, and the claim becomes part of your insurance record. Some people would rather it were not there, particularly early on when nothing is settled yet.

If you pay privately and do not submit a superbill, Ridge Way does not send a claim to your plan, and treatment decisions stay between you and your provider. Whether paying directly costs less than using insurance depends on your deductible, coinsurance and benefits. Neither choice is right for everybody, and you will not be steered toward either.

Estimates, Reimbursement and Policies

Claiming Back Part of a Visit

If your plan has out-of-network mental health benefits, part of a self-pay visit may be reimbursed. Your superbill carries the codes your insurer needs to process the claim.

Good Faith Estimate

Under the No Surprises Act, anyone not using insurance has the right to a written estimate before care happens. Ask at any time and we will provide one.

Sliding Scale

We offer a sliding scale for self-pay patients, based on household income and size. Ask our team when you book and we will tell you whether you qualify. It does not apply to Medicare or Medicare Advantage visits.

Using Insurance Instead

We are in network with major insurers and verify your benefits before your first visit, so you have an estimate of your expected cost before you are seen.

Questions About Cost

How much is a psychiatrist visit without insurance?

At Ridge Way, a self-pay initial psychiatric evaluation is $300 and each follow-up visit is $175, whether the appointment is in person or by telehealth. Payment is due at the time of service. We can provide a superbill that you may submit to your insurance plan for possible out-of-network reimbursement. Reimbursement is not guaranteed.

Is it cheaper to pay without insurance?

Sometimes, but it depends on your deductible, coinsurance, out-of-network benefits and the amount your plan allows. Ridge Way can tell you the self-pay price in advance, but your insurance company must explain what the same visit would cost under your benefits. If Ridge Way does not bill your insurance and you do not submit a superbill for reimbursement, Ridge Way will not send a claim for the visit to your plan.

Can I use an HSA or FSA?

Yes. Ridge Way accepts major credit cards and HSA or FSA cards. If you are uninsured or choose not to use insurance, you have the right to receive a written good faith estimate of expected charges before care, subject to the timing requirements of the No Surprises Act.
