When to See a Psychiatrist

Most people wait considerably longer than they needed to. A few book something that was never going to help. This is how to tell which you are.

Reasons to See a Psychiatrist

You do not need to be in crisis, and you do not need a diagnosis. Any of these is enough.

Worth Booking

  • Something changed and has not changed back after a few weeks
  • Therapy is helping but not enough on its own
  • A medication your primary care provider started is not working
  • Sleep, concentration or mood is affecting work or family
  • Somebody who knows you well has said something
  • You have been managing for years and would rather not keep doing that

Somewhere Else First

  • You want therapy rather than medication
  • You need psychological or autism testing
  • You are seeking benzodiazepines or opioid treatment
  • You are in crisis and need help today

Three Steps, Start to Plan

1 · Tell Us What Is Going On

A short form or a phone call. You do not need a referral unless your insurance plan requires one, and you do not need the right words yet.

2 · Insurance or Self-Pay

We verify benefits before the visit, or quote the self-pay rate. Either way you have an estimate of the cost first.

3 · Your First Appointment

Unhurried. History, what is happening now, and what you want to change.

Should I See a Psychiatrist or a Therapist?

A therapist helps you understand and change patterns. A psychiatrist diagnoses and prescribes. For a lot of people the answer is both, and starting with either is fine.

If you are not sure, call and describe what is going on. If we are the wrong fit we will say so and point you somewhere, which costs you a phone call rather than an appointment.
